I am a local, professional charter captain and fly fishing guide that spends 250+ days a year exploring the boundless marshes of southern Louisiana and the endless variety of beautiful and interesting birds. As an avid birder with a keen eye and a big love for the great outdoors, I will share my expertise and passion with you on our birding adventure!

As you step on my technical poling skiff at one of the colorful local marinas that shrimpers, crabbers, oystermen, and pelicans call home, I will give you a brief safety check before we motor down the bayou and into the most bountiful marshlands in North America.

Just minutes from the marina we will stop, watch, and photograph ospreys and belted kingfishers hunting over the bayou while keeping a lookout for the resident great horned owls. Moving on, the direction we will take is dictated by the wind and tide conditions and where different species have recently been spotted.

We will be launching the boat out of Hopedale Marina (40 min south of New Orleans) and will explore the Biloxi Wildlife Area and the islands on the edge of Chandeleur Sound. The marshlands just northeast of the Mississippi Delta are some of the most prolific and bountiful in North America – a true birder’s bonanza! Exploring this area is only possible with a boat and some local knowledge of the tides and conditions…

Common Species Include: Roseate Spoonbill, American White Pelican, American Oystercatcher, Black Skimmer, Purple Gallinule, Clapper and Sora Rails, Swallow Tailed Kite, American and Least Bittern, Magnificent Frigatebird, the Egrets–Great, Snowy, Cattle, Reddish, the Herons–Great Blue, Little Blue, Tricolored, Green, Yellow-Crowned and Black-Crowned Night Heron, the Ibises–Glossy, White Faced and White Ibis, the Terns–Royal, Forster’s, Sandwich, etc.  the shorebirds–Godwits, Curlews, Phalaropes, Yellowlegs, Stints, Sanderling, Dowitcher, Dunlin, Willet, etc…there are an endless variety of resident and migratory songbirds and ducks that travel through the Mississippi Delta flyway and we will see many!

THE ONLY WAY TO SEE THE MAJORITY OF THESE SPECIES IS TO TAKE A BOAT OUT INTO THE MARSH!
